Any code reader is adequate. Many have additional options. Local auto-parts (auto-zone, Nappa etc..) have them. Actrons work well and you should be able to pick-up for under 100 bucks.
Is it an OBD-2 type that I need though, or a different one?
I think in your profile, it said 2002 that's what you would want. It looks like they have various models, I would imagine that the lesser ones will only back up one or two modules for codes etc. It would really depend on how much of a DIYer that you are. Even though my skills aren't up there to do everything, I like to be able to have all the info that I can, so I tend to get more then what I could really use based on skill level. That would be the deciding factor I think, that and budget. In the long run though, I have found that it pays off rather quickly, just pulling codes alone it seems.
EDIT: I would also make sure that whatever you get is also CAN complaint. That way you can use it for any future vehicles you might get as I believe all vehicles are going over to CAN or have this year I believe.
Ya, I know that. I would just like one for the future though.
I bought one through amazon and day 1 on arrival my 7.3 would not start. Codes read IDM and from wiring I found defective power relay. Total cost $10 for relay + $265 scanner = 275 total
Cost to tow truck in and pay for parts replacement well over $1000 so I consider my scanner paid out. Acctron with all the acc cables is what I bought
(1) Will this one work with my truck, how good is it?
I would not know as your profile and post don't indicate what truck you have.
(2) Is it CAN complaint?
Sure it will fit in the can.
I know about all the extra OBD-1 stuff but I have an older Taurus that's why I decided to chose it.
If you know why ask? After all with 11 total post I am sure you have provided enough help for others on this site and can reapply your OBDI knowledge to find the correct one.

Bye and best of luck.
(1) My profile does indeed have my truck info in it.
(2) Pretty good answer. What's your job, being a comedian?
(3) If you were smart at all, you would realize that I selected one with the OBD-1 for the reason that I have an older car and it doesn't even relate to the truck at all.

I have to ask what did that achieve? You were way off base on your answers(I realize the funny factor you were trying to do, which it failed atleast for me, maybe not for others) and they didn't achieve anything in regard to answering the questions or having any relevance to the questions at all as your information was off base.
OP: I didn't see anything in there that would show that it was CAN complaint. I have always been one of those people that if it wasn't written in the specs or in the instruction manual, I just think that it doesn't have whatever it is that I'm looking for.
