Wrench light

Hey everyone! So I have a problem when I have been on the road for about an hour or more the wrench light comes on. There is no change in how the truck runs, and when I run a systems check it says that all of my temps are good to go. The one think I have noticed that the next morning I have a small oil leak on the ground on the days that the wrench has come on. The egr valve was just cleaned. I am getting ready to make a trip across the country with a 10,000 lb trailer so I am a little worried about this. Can I take it in to a shop and have them get a code when the light isn't on? Also I am replacing all of the glow plugs this weekend but from what I have read it shouldn't have anything to do with the wrench light. Any ideas?

Do you have a way to read data? Good idea to have one any way but pretty critical for a cross country trip, pulling a trailer.
You should be able to pull some codes if they are hard codes even if the light is off.
Find the source of that oil leak. It will only get worse.
What are you using to run a "systems check"? What year is this truck?
How many miles?
Any history on it?

I would also add that with no drivability issues you are likely looking at an excessive oil/coolant delta. Seems like it pops the wrench when the delta has been 25° for a certain period of or mile....

178k miles. I just bought it from a dealer but I was able to speak with the previous owner, he said that it needed a new egr valve that's the only think that he knew needed to be done. The dealer cleaned it but didn't replace it. The I have looked everywhere for the leak and I cannot find the source. When I checked the oil level the dealer had it over filled a tad so I was thinking maybe when it gets hot it's pushing a little out? No I do not have a way to read data yet but I am in the market. Any suggestions on what I should get to read data?

Scangauge II use code trt30 on advance auto's site for 30% off, edge insight cts, or one of the smartphone apps torque or dashboss depending on wether you have an iPhone or android.

Here is a great link Rusty put together for code readers/scanner options for the 6.0L. These are so important to have in my opinion, not only will it help diagnose problems if/when they occure, they can help catch a problem before it gets worse and save you tons of $.....

Here is a link to the TSB (service bulletin) which expands on the wrench light and associated codes & parameters that will cause the PCM to set the wrench light.

2006 models can be found on Page 2.

in my situation it was the oil cooler.

The systems check button on the dash/display isn't looking exactly at the oil cooler efficiency - just for the min/max temps - at least in my experience when monitoring the temps when the wrench light would come on due to my oil cooler needed to be changed.

You can download ForScan for free to a laptop, then get an ELM327 for the OBD port. ForScan is a great tool for reading codes and also pretty cool for seeing things live. I don't think it does contribution tests yet but I read they were looking into that feature as well.

Scangauge is an awesome tool for reading live date, but for codes not really worth a hoot as others will also tell you. You could have 30 codes and I am not sure it would show a single one when you hit the scan button.

It might take some serious digging to find the source of the leak. They can be tricky on this beast. Have you checked all the areas around the glow plugs and the harness on both sides? Also check up around the oil cooler housing. They may have spilled some oil when they took the old filter out, which by the way had better be a Motorcraft filter and not some auto parts el cheapo with the cap built into the filter. I would be double dog sure it's a Motorcraft filter and cap.

Find a shop that can check for codes and report back. Without knowing the codes can be like landing a feather on an aircraft carrier under full steam. It's pretty difficult if not impossible.

If you set your Scan Gauge to read the DTC numbers, it's pretty good at that, just don't ask it to read the codes to tell you which code it is. Program the X-gauge for the "DTC" count. Then use Forscan or Torque Pro to actually read the code.
