I am halfway to Yellowstone with the family pulling my 25' 7100lb trailer and the engine light came on. It is Saturday afternoon here in Salt Lake the Service Department at Ford (the 5 I called) already has closed and I am sure they will not be open on Sunday. There are no apparent signs of problems with the truck and it is pulling well. The Pyro, Turbo, and Trans are reading correctly and the engine is running strong. The light came on about 30 miles south of Provo in a construction zone. I am bone stock and last oil change was 2500 miles ago. The engine light is a solid amber. I spoke to a dealership and they said as long is the truck is running fine, the light is not red or flashing, I can make it to MT. I am camping at a KOA in West Yellowstone about 300 miles from where I am at now. I do not have a scanner so I wanted to run it by you guys. Could it be something came loose in the 20 mile construction zone? Is there a way I can get a scanner on my truck outside of ford? Does AutoZone or Checker have scanners. I just dont want to make things worse. If I get to West Yellowstone, I will find a dealer somewhere on Monday to check it. Thank you for your help!
you can take it to kragens or checkers or whatever and hopefully they are competent enough to pull the code for you. if it's running fine it might be something small. good luck.
My CEL light has been on for about two weeks, My dealer is tied up and my schedule is full and it looks like the light will be glowing for a while.
If it makes you feel any better, the last time this happened it was the EGR valve and it was stuck closed. My mileage went up two or three MPG, the truck pulled better, but the truck was noticably noisier. NO DAMAGE TO THE MOTOR FROM THIS.
Funny thing, I bought a diagnostic code reader, from autozone, not a cheap one, to see what the light was about and it would not communicate with the trucks computer, what the @#$%%?
Autozone and Kragen will sometimes lend you a scanner, but they are not usually CAN capable and so they won't link up to the engine's computer. So either check if they have a CAN capable reader (Innova) or PepBoys also has CAN-capable readers.
Utah has been getting a few of my buddies lately while they've been pulling trailers and when they finally got back to Las Vegas and I checked their trucks, it was always something related to an inferior reading of the MAF with a code of P11XX. Theirs was like yours, the truck was running fine even with the light on, so we just erased it.
Good luck and enjoy your vacation.
