That method gives you better ride true, but more importantly it gives you waaay better flex, i.e. articulation. Which is what you want for off road use. Heck, I'm not opposed to a four link & coilover setup, those are killer too, I'm just unclear on your point.
edit: Portal axles are great, but things can only be changed once and they were changed to Rockwells.
- I wasn't thinking rockwells, a set of axles off of a unimog are what I was thinking about,
who says a 18" lift has to be stiff?, go with as soft a spring rate as you can get away with, and not only will you increase flex, but also wheel travel.
shorter lifts mean limited articulation due to limited wheel travel

Right, Portal axles, like I said. BUT the change was already made to Rockwells which I was trying to explain. As far as your argument goes about a soft 18" lift, you aren't really accurate. It doesn't matter how soft of springs you get the sheer amount of drop vs mount points (which is why they are referred to as "banana springs") preclude a ride near as good as either of the other methods we've discussed. Also, a shorter lift does not at all mean less articulation, they are entirely different variables.

Unless you get like some 10 inch long shackles to let those springs stretch out
OK then, I agree completely with coil-overs, but by going to a softer spring rate you allow yourself more wheel droop, thus improving articulation.
and I didn't reallize that rockwells were already agreed upon.
One mod we should also look at is welding on a diamond plate flat bed, that way we will get more options for tool/spare parts storage, and it also would stiffen up the frame.
