First, why would you want to go backwards? Points are worse in every way, an far less reliable than electronic ignition.

HEI is a GM term, does your truck have an actual GM HEI distributor in it?

I never did have a properly maintained breaker points ignition system just up and quit like these electronic ignition systems are prone to do. Yes they required a little maintainence but once you understood them they were easy to get along with. Sorry, just had to comment.

I had an electronic system quit on me once. I've had breaker point systems quit on me over a dozen times. Since I've put WAY more miles in electronic systems I'd have to say the electronics are much more reliable.

The only downside to the electronic systems is that they typically can't be repaired on the side of the road when they die, where a breaker point system often can be (the many breaker point failures never left me stranded, the one electronic failure needed to be towed in).

Still, I'll never go back to points.

What in the world caused all that? specifically?

I only ever had one stall from a breaker point engine. I had recently bought an old car which belonged to an old guy and I assume he never replaced the condenser when he replaced the points and the condenser went dead.

Mostly burned points. And no, I didn't preface my experience by saying "properly maintained". But it didn't have any more neglect than most electronic systems that rarely fail.

My point is that although breaker point systems are simpler to fix, and therefore maybe less likely to leave you stranded, electronic ignitions are less likely to cause problems.
