Hi all. I'm looking for some guidance on buying my first Ford. There is a 1993 F-150 XLT extra cab 4x4 with 98K miles that the seller is asking $4500 for. I'm trying to figure out which tranny it has and the gear ratio. The reason I'm looking for a bigger truck...a step up from my 03 Tacoma, is because my lady and I are planning a one way trip down through Mexico and into Central America to live for a while. I want a 4 wheel drive getting through mexico and something that is going to be reliable while not breaking the bank.
From what I understand if the truck is a 351 with the C4 or C6 tranny and 3.55 gear ratio that's a good match. If it's the 302 with the E4OD and 4.10 it's also good. 4.10 with the C4 or C6 is no bueno due to the higher rpm's it will run on the freeway with.
Does anyone have any input here? I'm open to just about any educated suggestions. Thank you!
A '93 will most likely have an auto with overdrive regardless what engine it has, with the 5.0(or 4.9) you could find a 4R70w or E4OD or even the old AOD but if the truck has a 5.8 it will only be an E4OD. The C6 3spd was an option but it's not at all very common in this vintage truck and the C4 wasn't available at all.
Copy, thanks Conan. The truck is a 5.8. I've never owned a Ford, like I said already, but I have heard that the E4OD is a problematic transmission. Is this a pretty common complaint or just one of those things where you may get a good one and you may be unlucky?
The E4OD is a very good transmission that takes a bad rap from time to time. Keep it cool and change the fluid regularly and it will last for a long time.
Back to your original post....3.55 is the most common gear ratio for this vintage truck with a 5.8L and E4OD. Have the seller get you the axle code from the driver side door jamb sticker.
