Has anyone here ever tried to run a GM HEI distributor on their 4.9? If so, can you give me details on the installation and did it work well? It is just something I am considering. I run one on my cleveland in my Montego and it works wonders.
I've got the effing feedback setup on my truck now and was considering the duraspark II conversion but a buddy of mine keeps telling me I should put one on my 300 too. I wouldn't mind trying one on my 300 but I don't like the $350 price tag from DUI.
What you might not understand is...Ted thoroughly enjoys his state of mind.
An '83 or older carb, a DS2 distributor and either a 4-pin HEI module or a DS2 module and you are good to go.
I may be outside my damn mind. But I'm not the one wanting to run cheby parts on my truck.
The DSII is a good cheap distributor. You can even run the old hi-po Chrysler ignition modules with it. Myself I prefer the stock DSII module or a high $$ aftermarket box. The key is, what ever you choose to run for a module, carry a spare one with you. That way if the module craps out you aren't stranded somewhere on the side of the road.
After lurking @ FTE a few weeks gathering opinions and facts about the 300 I decided it was only courteous to contribute what Ive learned
on a 86 f150 4.9 I just swapped from feed back carb to carter rbs , went with the 2 piece efi manifolds walker downtube and points distributor "auto lite distributor+superstock coil and 7.5 mm wires, I would have opted for the DUI hei if they didnt cost as much as my pick up , Duraspark is awesome But I know points and they can be very reliable if maintained, Reliable like survive an atomic blast reliable
What I do know about the DUI hei Iv learned from running one in my fiero 2.5 , it is a super easy reliable setup and id personally recommend it ,my dui had locked advanced and the 7K rpm dyna mod , Its the distributor Ron Popeil would endorse "set it and forget it"
On a side note to all that's interested I am netting 15mpg on a 186k mile engine , although the rbs I choose was intended for a 1970 ford maverick 4.1L It works great , I did have to slot the carb mounting holes slightly with a round file to fit my studs but the throttle ball and stock fuel line location was correct , you will have to fab a new choke heat tube from brake line or mod your existing tube "mine was rusted beyond service" Your stock air cleaner isn't going to fit after you remove your egr plate it bangs the valve cover I went with a mr gasket 4 inch air filter it was a perfect fit
I have the pertronix 2 kit and after hearing about all the issues people are having with them I think I wanna get rid of it I'm in the process of restoring the truck and have rebuilt the engine and have yet to put the rebuilt distributor with all the pertronix stuff in it what coil do you guys recommend with the DS 2 and the GM module? And what kind of gap could be run with that?
Coil from a Chevy S10, they used an external coil from the factory, not the "coil in cap".
Make sure you run a 12ga wire to feed the module and coil, no resistor or resistance wire.
Any gap from 35 to 45 is good.
