In fact, I will use 4 low either backing up, or going forward, without locking in the front hubs if I just want a lower gear for what I'm doing, even on pavement. That's one advantage of manual hubs versus automatic hubs. You can cut the steering wheel as much as necessary without worry of binding things.

If the 4WD systems were as delicate as some would think, we'd hear of a LOT of broken components. But we don't. The only one I can remember that was caused by stress was a few months ago, and that was likely caused by a bad axle U-joint.
Using the system on dry roads will cause more wear, but you're unlikely to overheat something, especially when going straight. The truck is probably just fine.
