4x4 grinding
I think I have a major problem with my 4x4 system on my 2001 Explorer Sport. In 2wd, it drives and turns normally. When I shift into 4HI or 4LO, I have a grinding sound happening when I turn the wheels. Even when I'm driving in a straight line, the sound is there. I have to accelerate during a turn to get it to move, otherwise it comes to a grinding halt. What do you think it could be? Thanks for any help you can give.

Has any work been done on the front end recently? How well is it maintained? Did you check the fluid level in the front differential? Are you turning in 4WD while on dry pavement? How many miles does it have on it?

I test the 4x4 every month and this is the first time it's happened. It's very well maintained. I tired it on a gravel parking lot. It only has 63,000 km (or 40,000 miles) on it. I haven't checked the fluid level in the front differential yet, I'll do that when I get home tonight.

Well, I checked my differential fluid and found it was ok. I took it to the dealership to have them diagnose what it could be and they can't find anything wrong with it...am I going crazy here.

Probably something simple to overlook but crucial, like a u-joint. Sometimes they rust almost solid and don't feel loose to the hand but take it apart and a poof or rusted dust comes out...just a thought.
