Automatic Transmission Problems!

Hey there,

New to the diesel world here and just picked up my first 1997 F350 a couple months ago. When I bought the truck the guy warned me that he heard a knock come from the bell housing a while ago but he never looked into it. The truck then sat for three years before I bought it. When I first drove it the transmission wasn't slipping at all but after driving it for awhile it was having a hard time shifting. The truck would start shaking and would get a loud vibration from about 2500 to 3000 RPMs then finally shift hard. Also when I would start it up in the morning and let it warm up, when I put it in reverse the truck would bog down and then die. Today I was driving it and at about 45 MPH I lost the transmission. It would just rev up but not move, Both in drive and in reverse. Not sure if it is stuck in between gears but when I tried to turn it over after I shut it off it sound like a grinding noise. Have read possible torque converter problems but would love some opinions before I start throwing money at it when I may have to just buy a new tranny. Anything would help as I am new to the diesel world!!

Thanks, Trevor

I'm not an auto guy, but I'd check the tranny fluid first, but something tells me there is a tranny rebuild in your near future.

Sad to say but I think Tom is right. Any codes? Does the OT light flash? Maybe our auto expert Mark will come by to assist you.

My guess is that the torque converter grenaded. It isn't stuck between gears, that's impossible with an automatic transmission.
