Hey everyone, I am new here so I don't really know how this works. I am going to go ahead and tell my problem anyway. I have a 93 Explorer 4x4 with the A4LD tranny. There is 130,000 miles on this thing and I am having problems with it. When the truck is cold, it sometimes takes a little reving to get it to shift to reverse, or from reverse to drive. Also, if I slow down to take a 90 degree turn, it sometimes slips around the corner and then will catch again. Most of the time, these problems go away after driving the truck for 15-20 minutes. Please help!
Have you checked the fluid level, when the truck is warm? I've seen this several times in other posts....low fluid levels can cause problems, and a lot of people check it cold instead of warm.
I haven't checked it warm, I will do that and see if it matters. I have checked it cold before and it's been low in which case I would add fluid. Then it still has the same problem. I have also seen a lot of posts about this same problem as of late. Thanks for the info.
mines been rebuilt 2 times now. The first rebuild was not done right. They charged almost 1500, including rear seals & torque converter. They went out of business right before it went out again. The 2nd rebuild was done by a friend who left Amaco to start his own business. he charged 575 for it.
I had the same problem at 100,000 miles on a 96 Explorer. I changed the filter and flushed with T-Tech at Mobile one and the problem went away. I discovered during the filter change that the old filter was missing the "o"rings where the two vents connect into the bottom of the transmission. The missing "O" rings were allowing more air than fluid to get up into the transmission. You also may want to try Lucas transmssion treatment. It does wonders for hard seals.
Hope this helps.
Thanks for all of the advice. I am going to try to get the fluid and filter changed and if that doesn't work, I am going to try that tranny stuff. I keep hearing about it and I have heard of a couple of different brands, but I haven't heard anything bad yet.
I just got my 93 back from a friend who works, and owns a trans shop. Mine started doing strange stuff like your reverse issue, and then I lose reverse all together. Everyone I talked to said that I need a new trans but then i found out the the A4LD found behind all 4.0L shares a 3rd gear clutch pak with the reverse. So at this point my issue was that I have all forward gears and they worked find, but no reverse. Come to find out that the trans needed a new Servo valve which cost $17 and bam, problem solved, I have reverse back. The shop did not even need to pull the trans to get to this part and the total bill came to about $250 because I needed some seals and stuff replaced also.
On my 98 AWD 5.0L the problem started with reverse not working when it was hot and then have to rev it up. Next hard shifting between 1st and 2nd. Got a quote from local Ford dealer for a rebuilt $1350 and having a freind install it for $250.
Quote from 2 tranny shops varied from he would not quote it untill he disasembled the unit to $1800.
I went with the Ford unit 3 yr and 36k mile warranty. (Use a local business name that buys from Ford for wholesale prices.)
