Question '52 engine removal

prep'ing to make plans to yank out the original 215.

this would be my first engine removal -- pretty straightforward? a friend suggested it might be easier to drop it from below vs. pulling from hoist above.

any pointers? i tried searching a bit, but mostly just got posts that mentioned engine removal, not how-to. (but i'll keep looking.)

thanks.

Remove the doghouse and pull right out the top. Trying to drop it out the bottom would be a major PITA.

"doghouse"

is it easier to take motor/tranny together or does it really matter?

thanks.

I think Joe means the entire front sheet metal clip when he says 'doghouse.' It will come out about as easy by simply removing the hood and radiator and lifting it over the grille. Lifting the engine without the trans will be easier. Less length and weight to deal with.

Going down rather than up with the assembly will be difficult getting past the axle and such. I don't see how that would work at all.

Check your max hook height to make sure you can lift it high enough to clear the front end. With V8's, there is also potentially a problem with the crane's ram running into the grill or bumper to get close enough to reach. I made this diagram to figure out if my crane could do it. It would, but only if I hooked right on the block. Your Six is taller, too.

Your crane needs to be real solid with all that weight swinging around up that high!

And if your crane lifts almost high enough, let some air from the tires. Make certain the shop ceiling is high enough. No way the engine will come out the bottom easier than out the top.
Have fun.

Just did this. Remove the hood, then the front end sheet metal in one piece. It'll take you 30 minutes to spin out all the bolts then two people can lift it off. Pull the radiator and the rest is pretty simple. Back in the summer we pulled the 351W out of my sons ski boat and had it hanging 6 ft in the air on a big cherry picker. Not something for the faint of heart.

When I removed the 215 from my 52, I took the radiator and hood out. Unbolted the engine from the trans and pulled the engine out. You'll need to move the engine slightly forward inside the bay in order to pull it up and out.

You can also remove the front wheels and put the frame onto jack stands to lower the height in the front so you don't have to lift the engine high.

Don't you mean this would be your second engine pull?

Tell us your fabrication plans for installing that 5.8 into your truck. Did you rebuild the engine as you planned?
