I have given up on this engine of mine and am now pulling it out of my 1988 f150 5 speed manual trans. Everying is un hooked now and the engine is ready to be pulled. When i pull the engine out , should i be care full of how it comes off of the trans incase i brake something and is there an easy way when putting the engine back in the trcuk to get it hooked back up to the trany. This is my first real engine removal that is going to have an engine be put back it. So i am just not wanting to wreck anything and want the least hassel of putting the engine back it. Any comments ?????
There are a couple ways to skin this cat, but what I would do is pull the trans first. Yes you can break things badly when removing an engine with the trans in place. And reinstalling an engine with the trans is place is a real hat trick.
The other method--if possible--is to remove the engine and trans as a unit. There is not always room to do that, so you'll have to eyeball that and probably remove the hood and have a pretty high lift on the engine puller.
I would also pull the radiator. Not hard to do, and you remove an expensive, easily damaged obstacle.
Remove everything you can from the engine to reduce weight and remove things that can snag or hook onto anything. Remove anything from the engine compartment, such as the radiator, as MTOD said, to get them out of harm's way. I've always removed the engine from my Mustang with the 4 speed toploader attached, but that's a lower hood line to get over. So you might want to separate the transmission from the engine first to lighten the load and make it easier to get out of the truck. Use a transmission jack to help pull it off the engine, then roll it back out of the way.
