Normally I am not a fan of resurrected threads, but this new info is superb! Thanks for taking the time to put the rocker arms side-by-side so we can see the oiling hole.

Great find! Obviously you take the time to properly diagnose an issue. A rare TRUE mechanic!

It appears this problem was caught before damage to the rest of the engine. We replaced lifters, rocker arms and cam shaft and concern seems to be resolved.

What is interesting is that it appears Ford redesigned the lubrication port on the rocker arm. The old rocker arms (left) had a larger hole that directed oil straight up. The redesigned rocker arm (right) has a smaller hole that directs oil toward the roller bearings. Our guess is that the old design did not allow oil to reach the roller bearings, hence the failures.
If you read this thread, you'll find that the most likely cause of the issue was lack of oiling during extending idling because of a bad seal at the timing chain tensioner. That truck might be coming back

I have a fleet of 2011 and 2013 F450 SDs with the 6.8 liter V10. Right now, I am experiencing a high failure rate in the 2013's staring with what seems to be rocker failure on the # 4 and 5 cylinder.

Just wondering if anyone else is seeing this out there.

Failures (36 of them) have occurred between 25k and 57k miles.

Thanks.
check engine light came on still kept rolling for about 15 mins, got caught at light heard engine running rough drove another 5 mins ticking bAd. Plugged scanner in cylinder 10 misfire. Popped valve cover off went down the line feeling some rockers slightly loose got to 10 and I just grabbed it RIGHT OUT. IT WAS JUST SITTING IN POSITION

Hi,

What year is yours truck and how many miles? From your pics, you are on the older roller rockers that came out. Not sure what date Ford changed to the new rollers or they changed the valve guide tensioners. If yours has the older roller rockers, you may also have the older problematic tensioners and oil pump.

Earlier this year (120K miles) I did a total timing chain drive and tensioner rebuild to the new style, replaced all roller rockers to the new style, upgraded the oil pump to the Melling for the V10, and added an oil pressure gage so I can see what the oil pressure is. My chain tensioner gaskets were blown on both sides. I found about this issue while researching and doing other work on the truck. Since my 2005 F350 was built in late 2004, all the 05 engine redesign engine issues did not yet show up. I changed out mine before bad things happened and I wanted a reliable truck for another 100K miles. I like the performance of the engine, just have to get rid of the early years bugs out of it.

Thanks,

But wow, a 2015 with the old roller rockers? That is not that old. Anyone know what year Ford changed to the new roller rocker? and or putting in the new timing chain tensioners?

I just finished doing a full valve train replacement on my 2010 with 117K miles. What I have learned is the oil pumps and timing chain adjusters play a big role into issues with the cam roller followers. 2 recommendations use the melling high volume pump and use the melling cast iron timing chain adjusters to ensure proper oil pressure all the time. My original oil pump was very weak at idle so that was the reason for the upgrades. All the lash adjuster were fine and only 3 cam roller follower were questionable. I replaced all of it to ensure all of it would good for another 100K miles. It may be overkill to replace all the valve train but I work my truck so I look at it like a maintenance item.

I have an appointment with a shop to tune up my '05 F450 V-10. Also going to replace the timing chains. So I need to have them check the timing chain tensioners?
And looks like I need to switch to 5-30 motor oil.

Just out of curiosity, why are you replacing the timing chains? Those aren't normally a maintenance item.

My truck has 191540 miles. Want it to go 300,000. Friend has a 5.4 truck, his started making noise and the timing chain jumped a tooth and ruined the engine. And his had fewer miles, so that is the reason for the change.

.
Is the Ford part number to the updated cam follower on the right hand side of your photo above 3L3Z-6564-A ?

Is the Ford part number to the previous cam follower on the left hand side of your photo above F8AZ-6564-AA ?
