I have a bad cell in one of the 2 17 month old batteries. I have been told that it is essential to replace both. I took it in to the dealer this morning and they are only replacing the one bad battery. Everyone has always told me to replace both at the same time, even the service advisor at this very ford dealer. I had one bad battery 17 months ago and they told me I had to replace both.
So now I wonder??
The diff. is because before you were paying and now they are. Auto Zone and Costco have always in the past replaced mine in pairs while under warranty. Of course you never know when policy will change or you get a store manager that's having a bad day.

That's it. Pay for the other half out of pocket. Still be advisable to find out why one half choked. Was it defective or, lots of short trips? Doesn't do charging system any good either.
If it was the passenger side battery that cooked, consider building or picking up a heavier duty cable to better interconnect the two batteries. At issue is that the starter and glow plugs are hard wired to the passenger side and the teeny 6 gauge wire that Ford gave us for the interconnect is too little, too late.
Our interconnect cable, for example, is 4/0 wire - nearly an inch in diameter copper!
Update: TooManyToys rightfully has pointed out that the interconnect wire isn't the 6 gauge wire that I was just SO sure it was given the many references I found suggesting it that size. It is in fact 2 gauge - a sure step in the right direction (not that bigger isn't always helpful!). There is also some incredibly good speculation that even more important than upgrading to a larger interconnect wire is installing a 1/0 wire on the driver side of the vehicle - all of that discussion can be found in the thread at https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...batteries.html. We will be of course doing our own testing which then may result in an enhancement/modification of our cable kits. Stay tuned!
And as you noted IMO the cause of the disparity in battery life is documented in the video I posted in the other thread. I've had that cable in place now for almost three years. I'll be update that chapter on the electrical system once the ambient temps get way low so I can document those battery current readings.

Thanks - I didn't know that your mailbox was yet cleared.
I'll get you a message over hopefully later today.

Let me know if you would like any help testing. It should be getting cold here in South Dakota in a month or so. I got mine setup like you recommended in the other thread.
