The 38R should have a waste gate, mine does. It does not have the EBPV. As for the AR, I don't know. The 38R will spool faster, and get you more boost. It is louder though.
Not to say you are wrong in any way, but I've read that the 38r actually spools slower because of the bigger housing and having an intercooler some say it's slower off the start but better through the Rpms. are you sure you have a 38r? The guy I bought it off of thought he had 2, turned out only the one ON the bus was a 38r.
so do I use the rear housing that has the wastegate internals, from my 38 on the 38r? I'm not so sure what to do in this situation. Never taken apart a turbo but I have a hand full of friends and family that have so I won't be scared to dig in if I have to.
Maybe a picture of the two side to side may help determine what I'm referring to when I say "rear housing for wastegate internals"?!?! Haha I'll upload one in a second
Wheel looks similar to the one on the right. Has a 1.15 A/R on the hot side. I got the turbo on and running just 4" downpipe til I can get it on the lift to weld up this 4" pipe I picked up at a local muffler shop for $43 and some change... My jaw dropped when he said $43. Everyone else I had spoken to said a 7.5 foot piece of 4" pipe would be $120+
So I lucked out. But man there is a huge difference in the truck now. It's not as quick on lower end but boy does she get up and go when that turbo kicks in. Also building a lot more boost which isn't bad to me.
But I pulled the turbo off the van myself, so it wasn't just told to me if came off a van. I pulled it myself.
I recently bought an OBS engine with all the hardware on it - the blades look the same as the 38R - just smaller. I guess we're talking van turbo - I didn't put that together when you mentioned "bus".

Yeah, it deff came off a bus but from my understanding the bus is basically a van, well it's the same front end. Here's the only pictures I took of the bus itself and the turbo when I pulled it.
He even let me start it up before I started pulling parts off of it so that I knew it was in good working order, plus for $185 I couldn't pass up the deal. Van/bus had 167k on the entire thing.
He's selling me the 450 front springs to match my 450 leafs on the rear for $50. Has one of those big amp alternators I'm thinking about snatching. If anyone needs anything let me know the bus is pretty whole besides the turbo that I took off it. Guy said he put a helmet on and drove it 14 miles to where it's parked now. Lol
