Copy/paste from the other joying HU thread.

Hello everyone.

I just wanted to post here that there's been some developments with the joying units. They are getting some attention from the xda community and it's now getting interesting. I just flashed a custom ROM to the unit this morning and all I can say is that it's much better than it was.

First, you need to verify that you indeed have a joying unit. To find this, go to settings>about and under the "MCU Version" portion you should have something similar to "MTCB-JY-V2.68" in the blank. It must contain "JY" to be a positive ID of a joying unit.

After that, all you need is a USB pen drive with the unpacked .img from here loaded to it. Ensure that you are downloading the correct RK3066 or RK3188 processor and the appropriate resolution file. (i.e. if you have a dual core unit with a 1024x600 screen, you'll need the file containing RK3066 and 1024x600 in the title. The files are in RAR format, you just unpack and it'll create a update.img file) Put this file onto the pen drive. There are two types, regular android and one with the improved "NEXT" launcher that has thousands of themes free on google play.

Just fire up your unit, plug in the USB stick and the unit will warn you that there is an update. click OK and it'll automatically install the new firmware. It takes a few minutes for it to install, and it will shut down and restart a couple of times. The final time it turns on, the post screen "android" logo will stay on for quite some time while the OS is upgrading. After that, everything is customize able and the UI works more fluid like.

Did you lose any of the custom joying apps when doing this. I'm particularly concerned about the radio and dash cam apps. I haven't found the apks to get them back should the ever go away on me.

Nope, they're all there. The .apk s can all be found in the android auto section of XDA-Developers Android Forums.

You gain many, many more.... And twice the storage space!

I have no experience with the first one, the second one is just like mine, but quad core. They work well, especially when you load a cooked ROM to it.

I just bought this one. I am not much of an electrician so connecting everything up wiring wise will be a challenge for me.

https://www.carjoying.com/us-warehou...r-gps-rad.html

A custom shop quoted me $795 to install the unit and backup and dash cams, plus the gps antennae. Left there very quickly. The Geek Squad does installs. I may have them do the basic headunit and do the camera stuff later.

Wiring won't be as difficult as you expect. First thing is getting it in the dash. The link you posted describes the it as "7", which should go in without major cutting.

Do you have a wiring harness adaptor, and a mounting kit for the HU?

Do you have (2) HU video inputs for cams, or splitting them on demand?

I have 2 mounts, one used in a thread here that is basically the 2 side pieces and another that was supposed to fit an Expedition with the same radio with 6 cd player. Both may require some trimming if used. I have all the harnesses including the steering wheel control unit. I bought both the backup and dash cams from Joying to be used with it. It has 2 inputs video for the backup and usb for the dash cam. I found a highly rated place whose cost is more reasonable for installation of the headunit and gps antennae. I will get them to do the cams later or I will. I have a trip to Kansas next week and want it working by then. He made a special Saturday morning appt for me but only has the time for the headunit right now.

I had problems trying to connect my ScanTool MX to the unit to run Torque. Seems it isn't compatible. I ordered a Joying OBDII adapter to try with it. The one other problem I have had is Google Nav/Maps speaking function doesn't seem to work correctly. Just mutes the radio and stays there. Some say when Streaming BT music it works. I have a email to them about these things. Also I asked them for guidance on how to change the button colors and get a Ford splash screen to work. We will see.

The unit I bought has rca jacks for video and audio so I would think so if it uses these.

Joying responded to my emailed questions. Google nav stops whatever music is playing and fails to restart when its message is over. Otherwise works fine. They pointed me to a firm ware upgrade. I am holding off doing anything for now. I wanted a Ford symbol for the splash screen when first starting up. There is an app called CarMedi and a password required. The app is already loaded and the password is 3368. I also changed the button colors here to green to match the existing lighting. I want a plain black background and there were instructions on how to do this as well, but I haven't done it yet. They said they just had a system update Dec. 8th and that is why it isn't up to date (mine shipped 14th Nov.). The IGO nav app works just fine and mutes audio and returns like it is supposed to. Cost to upgrade maps though. Between Google Nav, IGO and an old Garmin backup, I should be able to find anything. So far I am very impressed with the unit itself, the fit, and everything working like it should (mostly). If the update fixes the Google nav issue and the ScanTool MX issue I will be golden!

It is. DVD only needs power to run(green wire if I remember correctly). I hooked mine up to an AUX input. It works but I lost the center console rear control function. I can also listen to the radio up front while the kids can listen to the DVD through the headphones.
