Picking up my new-used 98 F150 3dr today....gonna retire the 88 after many good years......the factory radio doesn't have a CD button anywhere so I assume it can't control a CD changer.......what years and models of head units will retrofit back into the dash of this truck and give me either a single CD or capable of controlling a factory changer ? Also, is the truck pre-wired for the changer and where inside the truck does it go ?
Thanks in advance,
Phillip
i am not sure about which ones are controllable....but i do not believe any of them are pre-wired....unless it came installed in the truck.
truthfully i would recommend putting in a nice MP3 head unit in.....it will most likely be cheaper then a changer....and you can fit about 200 songs per disc on an mp3.
never mind the fact that a after market head unit will make even your stock speakers sound 4x better.
i had stock in..and put a Alpine 9847 head unit in....and man did it liven up the stock 6x8's in the door.....i then went ahead and put 1 10" kicker CVT shallow mount sub in and a lower end Rockford 600W amp.....it sounds very very nice now.....and eventually when i get the money i will put mids and tweets in....but the stock speakers sound very nice as it is.
i would strongly advise against a cheap head-unit.
cheap head-units will make your stock speakers sound worse than your stock player.
if you buy a good brand name(Alpine,Pioneer Premiere,JVC)...decent model($200-250)...you are going to be much more pleased....i purchased my alpine deck for $175CAD($150USD) used online(i am not saying you have to go used) it was a regular $300CAD deck....and it sounds amazing.
also most of the higher brands(Alpine,Pioneer Premiere,JVC)....have AUX modes...i know my alpine does and i just had to buy the special cable)($20) that converts it from alpine port to Red and White RCA's...and then RCA to 3.5mm headphone jack($5 cable)...and i ran it all under my dash and it comes out by my cigarette lighter..and i can plug into any 3.5mm audio device i want....from an ipod...to a laptop....and i get crystal clear sound....out of a mid-range deck.
i know lots of people like to skimp in areas....but head-units are not one of them in my opinion....becuase they are the module that controls everything...it does not matter how nice of speakers you got...if your head-unit does not have the ***** to control it....it will still sound like ***.

Is your sub under the rear seat or just in a sub box behind the front seat ? I'm thinking hard about getting one of those that fit under the rear seat .
It has been a few years since I messed with the stereo but IIRC the '97 and '98's have a different plug from the '99+ but you can buy an adapter. A 6 disc H/U will not fit without chopping out the mounting bracket, a single OE disc player should fit without a problem the plug would be the only possible problem.

well it is currentley just behind my seat in an old box i had lying around...but i am in the process of building a box that fits under my seat and houses both the sub and the amp.
let me tell you though...man does this sub THROW.....i only have a 240RMS amp hooked up...and the sub can handle 400RMS/800Peak....and it still throws louder then my friends 2 10's (kicker non shallow)in his truck.
the shallow subs are alot more advanced...they are not much shallower...but they throw more than the pioneer premiere shallow...and they are 400rms and 800 peak. over the non shallow kicker which is 300 and 600
i reccomend them!....also i just got one in my truck...and trust me when i says its plenty...and i am a 17 year old that likes my bass.
I just put a Pioneer DEH690USB iPod controller/mp3cd deck in my Ranger. Paid 220 for it, I'm about to get another one for my F150. Nice to be able to just plug the ipod in, stash it in the little holder above the player and use the supplied remote. Also has subwoofer preouts which is NICE. Especially if you are a little short on cash. Just drop a nice sub woofer in and don't worry about replacing the stock speakers. Just use the built-in bass filter for the 6x8 wall speakers.
I noticed your post and couldn't help but mention the Brandmotion iPod Direct Connect Adapter that works with the F-150. Have you ever heard of it? It is on sale right now for $225. It is simple to install by yourself only takes less than 10 minutes. Also, you can use all your factory radio controls to operate it and the adapter charges your ipod while it is being used. Here is a link to the sale. http://store.brandmotion.com/product...products_id=68
If you aren't interested that's fine I just thought I'd let you know.

whoa...$225?....at that price you might as well install an aftermarket headunit and you will get superior sound quailty out of your stock speakers and still be able to hook your ipod up....plus almost all mid-range decks now come with remotes which is a nice bonus over stock system.
Yeah I have a Sony H/U that has a set of RCA in jacks on the back. I bought a $25 adapter that has RCA's and then a single headphone style jack that I mounted above my H/U and plug my XM and Ipod into.

this is exactly what i did...except i got mine over on the left hand side.
thats about the best $20 i have spent in awhile....i can plug my whole laptop in and have 100gb of music if i wanted.
I have a '98 2-door i put a new cd player in mine... it was a piece of cake.. i had to buy a clip that wired to my headunit's harness.. and a mounting kit for the smaller stereo(with a nifty little pocket on top ) it was easy.. i chose to unbolt the airbag shutoff switch, to get the bezel out of my way.. cause i had to run RCA's and a killswitch for my amp.. i'm very happy with the results.. door speakers were simple too.. i have pics in my gallery of everything back together...
