Have an 80 Ford F100 with the 300I6 and C6 tranny. Am curious about my Rear Diff. I believe I have the 8 inch rear end but there is not cover to remove on the back its on the front with the drive shaft? In order to change the fluid in that is there a drain and fill hole or am I going to have to remove the drive shaft from the axel then remove it like I would if I was removing the back plate. seems a lot of work for a fluid change?? Also the back part of the diff is more oblong than round I heard that makes a difference in what size you have. and if it is just a drain plug and fill plug whats the recommended Fluid. Thanks All for any Help this is such a great Forum
You more than likely have a 9 inch rearend. The fill plug is on the driver's side front about mid-way up. There usually is no drain plug, you can try to suck it out, or you could pull the driveshaft and pull the whole front off like you mentioned. That's a lot of work though.
Some people drill and tap drain holes in the rear housing.
I think if you want to pull the third member out you also need to first pull out both axle shafts. Makes it even harder to use that method to drain the old lube. I'd use the suction gun method personally.

Boy I forgot about that. He won't get far without pulling the axles. Thanks.
Thank you all for the Info its all appreciated defiantly am going to try the suction method first see how much of that old stuff can get out. Hopefully wont have any issues with the changing of the fluid for I don't know if it has ever been done.
