Urgent!!!!

the beast has developed a loud tapping noise coming from under the driver side valve cover. i have confirmed it is there with mechanic stethoscope. im leaning towards a stuck lifter. im thinking of doing an oil change with that rotella 15w40 and a quart of lucas to see if it frees it up. any ideas?

I think its worth a try. If it doesn't fix it, you may end up having to pull the lower intake.

you can try oil changes, but chances are youll be going in there anyway to replace the lifters. if youre ok with those chances then try the oil change, otherwise just tear it down.

Adding Lucas isn't gonna help your problem.

It's a thickening agent and what you need is detergent. There is literally NO additives in Lucas. You would be better off with just a quart of Synthetic oil, MMO or heck, even tranny fluid. A sticking lifter is usually due to varnish or sludge that has kept it from working correctly. And it's machined to such tight clearances that the thicker oil isn't gonna help any.

Just my $0.02

MMO is the stuff to use, if stuck lifter is actually "the" problem. Use at the recommended amount in both the fuel and the oil, to be sure, for all your "stuck" engine parts needs.

well i have an update. i decided to do the rotella 15w-40 oil change. when i removed the oil filter i noticed that it was extremely heavy. its only 1 month old so idk if it couldve clogged so fast. however i did replace the intake manifold gasket and its possible that some old gasket got into the oil passages despite plugging everything up, or some coolant mixed with the oil and thickened it up......either way the engine has never been this quiet before. is it safe to keep using this diesel oil in my 5.0 efi?

Just FYI yes you can run Rotella in your gas EFI motor. You can run it in whatever you want, it's actually a better oil than what's recommended as long as you use an appropriate weight for your application. ANY brand of 15-40 would have probably quieted the thing down, just by being a heavier oil.

Good luck and let us know.

i plan on going back to 10w30 in a couple weeks. i think the detergents in the diesel oil mightve freed it up. either way i will post back in a week or two when i change it back
