My wife's 2003 explorer (4.0sohc) is making valve tapping noise on the driver's side. I searched this forum and found out about the tenisoner problems with the earlier engines. I have removed, cleaned and reinstalled both of the tensioners for the cam shafts but to no avail the tapping still happens between 2500 and 3500 rpm (loaded). I used a stethascope and it sounds like the valves on the drivers side are tapping.
Truck has 80k+ miles and is driven to work and back and errands. Oil has been changed every 5000 miles with conventional 5W30. We run 87 octane. I have "seafoamed" the intake side and had no change.
Any one had any experience with this?
They usually clear up on their own like in a months time. If not, an easy Step One would be to run some Engine Flush in the oil before draining the oil. I usually recommend a lighter oil too to fix it but your oil is already pretty light.
THX, I spoke with a buddy of mine who thinks it may be a lifter. I will try some engine gunk or something to clean it out before climbing inside the valve cover.
Use a product called AutoRX. Is that is not available, try Rislone. Also for future reference, don't use Fram oil filters. They are know to cause lifter problems on a lot of makes and models due to small fibers coming loose from the media and getting stuck in the lifters and other small oil passages.
Bear, are you recommending the Rislone engine treatment or do they also make an engine flush? I checked at AutoZone but all they had in that brand were an oil addititive engine treatment and one which was meant for restoring compression.
