Ok, i have a 1990 ranger with a 2.9 in it, it has a loud noise coming from what seems to be lifters or something of that nature. I have take the valve covers off and turn the adjusting screw on one side to see if that maybe would help but it didn't. Its actually pretty loud and its been making this noise since i got it. I have hooked up a oil pressure gauge and drove around with it on for acouple days and it seemed very normal, no abnormal drops or anything. If someone could help that would be appreciated. thanks
Ticking lifters in a hydraulic lifter engine usually indicate a stuck lifter, usually caused by contamination or sludge or other unpleasant things brought on by long oil change intervals or low detergent oil.
I would look into a detergent additive, run it and change the oil. Maybe try that a couple of times--you could get lucky and clear it up.
very common problem with those. Oil return holes end up plugged, then they don't end up with enough pressure and oil. How much oil pressure do you have??
