Hi all, I'm new here. I have an 87 F-250 with a 300 and a 4 speed and 142,000 on it, mostly highway miles, but some towing. I've owned it since it had only 11,000 on it so I know most of its history. Recently (in the last 5,000 or so) I've started to get a REALLY bad lifter clack. It actually sounds like several lifters, but one is very pronounced. It's there all the time, every speed. It also seems to get substantially louder over 3200 rpm. It still starts, runs, and drives fine, but I've seemed to notice a slight loss in power and RPM's. I don't know a whole ton about this motor other than they run forever (I'm a Chevy guy.. I know I know ). Was this a common problem for these engines or is something else up? I've maintained it very well changing the oil every 3-4000 miles and giving it regular tune ups. Up until now I have had zero problems with it (other than it leaking oil everywhere ). Any thoughts/suggestions are appreciated!
If it were my ('82) vintage - I'd say re-adjust/tighten the rockers - but I believe your '87 has the non-adjustable kind. Good luck - sorry I can't be more help.
Well, what oil and filter are you using? Frams tend to have lower filter media content and you will notice a drop in oil pressure. It is possible that the oil has start to sludge. Try changing the oil with 10w-30, and replacing on of the quarts of oil with Marvels Mystery oil. I have used it in every vehical i own with great results. I do not notice a drop in oil vicosity because my pressure is constant after i change the oil. I usually do it once every 3 changes. MMO has hydrocarons in it which acts as a detergent, and a base of wintergreen oil, love that smell. Change the oil again in about a thousand miles, filter too. Also change your pcv valve to prevent future sludging. Do you have a good thermostat in it?
I'm using Quaker State 10W-30 and a Motorcraft filter, the same thing I've been using since day 1. I also have regularly run Marvel Mystery Oil through her too, usually every 3rd or 4th oil change. I did just recently change the oil and added MMO with the hope of it curing the problem, no such luck. The oil pressure and temperature are both good and from what I can see of the inside of the valve cover, the engine is very clean inside. I wonder if it just didn't have a lifter go south...
