So I'm new to the whole truck world. I bought a 2008 5.4l xlt about a year ago now. For the first time I took it on a trail that had a little mud. With my incredible wisdom, I decided to park the truck rather than wash it off. The next day the engine started making weird noises when I turned the steering wheel. After washing the truck it still made noises so I opened the hood. THE ENTIRE engine compartment is covered in a serious amount of mud. I feel that this has to be what started the noises when I turn. Mud dried in the wrong place? The noise sounds like a whine and its pitch matches the engine rpm until over 2500 where I don't really hear it anymore. Any suggestions? Is there a way to flush the engine compartment? Sorry for the rookie post, not used to these issues.
lots of electronics and there are 8 separate COILS for ignition. Get something too wet and you will have PLENTY of problems...... Noise is probably the fan belt and pulleys. You could concentrate wash in that area. Stay away from major electrical plugs and the coils.. If the mud is all dry I would try chipping it off and maybe dry wire or hard brissle brush by hand to get as much as possible off.
I have been mudding with my two previous Rangers and an Explorer and never had mud in the engine compartment so bad. I bought my 08 F150 last summer and just went mudding last weekend. One deep puddle as well. I washed the truck and some of the undercarriage right away but not the engine until a few days later. I just used a garden hose for the engine. It is still making noises just like you are describing and also the horn doesn't sound properly. It's very quiet. Just thought I would piggy back on your thread here if anyone has any further info on the horn not working? I did try specifically washing out horn but no change.

Try checking all of the electrical connections on the horn. Mine were corroded pretty badly, and once I cleaned them up it got quite a bit louder.
Thought I would just post a reply in case this would help anyone down the road. The mud had dried on a coil and ****ed a sensor up in a tube so I swapped those out. I would suggest to anyone else later down the road that owns a 2008 to rinse the engine compartment after being on a trail.
