Unhappy 96 explorer chirping noise

Hello all. This is my first post. My 96 explorer, 4.0 engine is making a peculiar chirping noise which gets loud at times. I thought it was my alternator or something else belt driven. So I removed the belt, started the engine and the noise was still there. I only hear it at idle. The engine seems to run fine otherwise. The noise sometimes goes away. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks to all. PS.......it sounds like it's coming from the front of the engine.

It's amazing the kind of racket a rubber belt can make. For starters spray a little water on the belt & see if the noise goes away. A few years ago I was about 3 K miles into a 6K trip with trailer behind my 87 Ranger & thought for sure the noise it suddenly started making was the water pump. Sprayed a little water on the belts & the noise was gone. Finished the trip/changed the belts/problem solved. OOPS, you removed THE belt (serpentine) not A belt. You might be able to isolate where the noise is coming from with a "mechanics stethoscope" (length of garden hose)

First thing to do would be to isolate where it is coming from. User a mechanics stethescope or lenght of garden hose and, with the motor running, take a listen to different things. That should tell you where it is coming from. It could be the IAC that is causing the problem, since you mentioned that it only happens at idle. Let us know what you find so we can assist with the repair.

Thanks

Thanks 87 and 99. I'll try isolating the noise as you both suggested and let you know my findings.

This sure sounds familiar to me when I had a weird chirping noise coming from my wife's 98 mountaineer with a 302 engine. The noise would sometimes disappear and later come back. I also orginally thought that perhaps it was somewhere in the serpentine belt drive area and even when I removed the belt, I still had the chirping noise. The culprit was the plastic Cam Sensor which is located where a traditional distributor would be on the engine. The cam sensor has a magnet mounted inside and a metal shaft rotates pass the inside of this sensor. The magnet had broken loose and caused the chirping sound that varied with the reving of the engine. If you need more details, please feel free to ask and I'll explain further. I hope this helps.

The cam sensor sounds like the problem here i had that problem and it was that, to make sure its that when you start the vehicle use a hose or a long head screwdriver and place it on the cam sensor and if its chirping like somethings rattling in there theres your problem hope this works!

Good Luck!
