engine noise
I have an 03 f-250, 6 liter with about 50k miles and just developed a new medium pitch constant whine. Fairly loud from under the hood. It comes only when the engine is running and stops when the key is turned off quickly with the engine. Is not speed sensative and or engine rpm sensative. I seems to come from the left side upper of the engine compartment. Help, any ideas what it might be???

Could be an idler pully bearing. Noise is very hard to trace down. Maybe even the serpentine belt. You could spray a little belt dressing on the belt to see if that stops the noise. If so, You probably want to replace the belt. You could also remove the belt and check for play in pullies.
