Swapping a 223 out for a 262 - transmission Q

Hello, I've a 1963 M100 with a 223ci three speed light duty transmission. The 223 burns a lot of oil. I've found a 1964 F350 dump truck with a 262 and a auxilarry transmission. The 262 is said to run very well burning no oil. I cannot be sure which auxillary transmission it is; one of the Splicers.

From my shop manual it looks like the bell housing with be very different. Any insight on pulling both motors & swapping the transmissions so I can install the 262 connected to my three speed transmission back into my half ton?

I'm going to look at the F350 today & will get the data plate & try to get a good look at the bell housing.

F100/250 3 speed 223 bell housing is not the same as 262 4 speed.

Just use the 223 bellhousing.

I'm flaking out on the 262. Woke up this morning thinking installing it is a sideway step & I should be looking for a forward step. I'm starting to learn about the 300 I6. Seems like a more intellegent choice for me considering I just want a servicable truck that I can depend upon to get to work & go camping in the mountains with.

The 1964 262 is in central Alberta and have a working dump truck hoist etc setup. If someone ia intrested I'll send them the link. The air cleaner had the original sticker262 sticker on it.

I don't see how a 300 is any more serviceable or dependable. A stock 262 has way more power than a 223. If I were in your position I would definitely do the 262.

Even if you want to do something else in the future, its not like you put a ton of work in the swap.

I very much appreciate your input. I'll keep thinking it over . The carberator butterfly valve is seized on the 262, another peice of the puzzle. I'll look into it's differences from my single barrel 223 while I also look into the work involved of putting in a third generation six cylinder (240,300).

I think your 223 is likely front and rear engine mounts, but could be wrong on that account. If you want to use the same mounting system with a 240/300 then I believe you'd want to find one from a 1965 F100 or F250 4x4 or 1966 F250 4x4 or 65-66 F350. Otherwise if you use a newer 300 or 2WD donor with side mounts then you'd have to convert to an aftermarket cross brace underneath the middle of the engine.

The bellhousings for these things are getting hard to find. I know at least one guy that ended up selling his truck because he couldn't find one of the 240/300 "eared" bellhousings that the rear support uses. He thought he found one for a I-6 but when it arrived it was a FE bellhousing which had the same ears but physically won't bolt up correctly to the I-6 engine.

Frustrated, he threw in the towel on that project altogether.

Not sure I'm up to modifying the engine mounts or finding a neddle in a hay stack. My truck does indeed have front/rear engine mounts.

I would jump at the chance for the rare torquey 262. IMO, I would install the 262 with the 4 speed as one complete unit, it will bolt right in. 3 speeds are light duty and are notorious for imbarresing column hang ups, the 4 spds granny gear is nice to have in those nasty binds. You would have to remove the parking brake drum and have the drive shaft lengthened. You should be able to sell your spicer auxiliary overdrive box for some extra cash to a another F 350 thru F 600 owner.

Okay, I am going to jump for the 262. Didn't realize initally how neat the 262 is. I'm going for it, hopefully will pick it up this Sunday. The thought of cutting a hole in the floor doesn't sound appealing initially. Will ruminate on this. Could save me changing the rear end ratio I suppose. I've a 4.11 right now which is too slow even on the secondary highways.

Anyone able to point me in the direction of a parts catalog for download for future reference.
The first issue I think will be swapping carberators. I've to find out the differences between the A & E single barrel carb.

Another question. This is a 1964 grill correct?

This is where the 262 is coming from.

Correct.

C4TZ-8200-A .. Painted Steel Grille / Obsolete

Applications: 1964 F00/750 Standard Cabs.
-------------------------------------------------
The 4th digit of the VIN s the engine code: B = 262 1V I-6 / J = 223 1V I-6.

There is no parts catalog that can be downloaded and AFAIK, no one repro's a Mercury Truck Parts Catalog.

The 1957/63 & 1964/72 Ford Truck Parts Catalogs are available on C/D's from hipoparts.com.

If your F 350 has one piece wheels, don't scrap them, they are also desirable items. Either single style or dual style wheels were available and both used tubeless tires. I believe the sizes were 17.5" and 19.5"
