I replaced the starter solenoid today (it was confirmed bad) and when I went to start the truck, I just get a grinding noise from the starter and the engine doesn't turn over.
The truck was running (and starting) fine before the solenoid crapped out a few weeks ago.
I cleaned all of the electrical contact points before installing the new solenoid. I also tried jumping it off (to make sure it wasn't the battery).
My guess is that the starter clutch isn't engaging for some unknown reason and/or the starter is bad. It just seems odd that it happened in conjunction with the solenoid going bad.
The truck has headers so I'm not looking forward to changing the starter if that's what the problem is.
Any other ideas before I go yanking the passenger side header to replace the starter?
I believe you will have to take the starter off. It sounds like the one-way clutch in the bendix is bad. Did the old solenoid stick with the engine running and you had to yank the battery cable off to get it to quit? That would do it.
^^^He is probably right, but try loosening the bolts and pushing the starter towards the engine and then re-tightening the bolts, my starter shifts away from the flex-plate on occasion.
It sounds stupid, but I'd check to see if the cable running from the solenoid is rubbing against the header.
I installed a set of headers on mine and shortly after i couldn't start it, and it was dead in the parking lot at work. Tried boosting it, nothing. Tried jumping across the solenoid, lots of power, nothing. Tried bypassing each wire nothing.
Changed the starter and solenoid. Nothing. Then i noticed the little flash as it was short circuiting in the dark. moved the wire away, and it was fine.
