Tonight I was going to leave a family party and my 99 F-350 w/ PSD 7.3 starter would not turn over. I can hear the solenoid click on the passenger side and the solenoid on the starter click everyso often when I depress the clutch. So I got under the truck to check the electrical connections, and it smelled a little burnt, but I have never had a problem with the starter. The factory volt guage didnt so any draw when I tried to start the truck. Never the less, my cousins helped me pop start the truck and went to local auto parts store and got a reman for tomarrrow. Has anyone else had a starter just die with no warning signs? Oh and and advice or hints on starter replacement? I have changed alot of starters in equipment/tractors but never replaced in my pickup.... and advice would be great!!
yes it does sound like a starter. to test it remove the starter get some jumper cables hook one side of the cables to a battery then hook the neg cable to the starters case( a mounting bolt eye works well) then the pos cable to where the hot wire hooks onto. the starter should spin if not then it is bad. BE SURE TO USE EYE PROTECTION NOT GLASSES BUT GOOGLES!!
thanks for the reply, I changed out the starter this morning, what a difference! The engine cranks over alot faster than the old starter. I guess the old one was going bad for a while since it was weak. Only took about 1/2 hour to change out.
