so i was trying to get my truck to run, it ran for a little bit, then died, me and my dad thought it was the battery so we charged it the went to try it, all the lights and everything turned on but when we went to crank it it just clicked. i wire brushed all the terminals and conections on battery and starter solenoid, but it still clicks and smokes.
my question is how much is a new starter solenoid and what caused it to just die, probably its age though....
how long has the truck not ran? I had the same problem on another vehicle and it turned out that the drive gear had siezed due to rust and shorted out the solenoid when i tried to crank over the engine. I would drop the starter and inspect it and check continuity in your cables goin to the starter.
If you hear a click when you turn the key, then the solenoid is (in your case, was) fine. The click is the sound of the solenoid contacts closing inside; that's all it's supposed to do.
If the starter solenoid is smoking, then most likely the starter is drawing too much current either because of a short or a seized drive gear, as suggested above. Get the starter bench tested. Unfortunately if your starter has made the solenoid smoke, then the solenoid should be replaced after the starter issue is solved. They usually run under $20. But if all you do is replace the solenoid, you will have the same problem.
If you wanna test the starter before unbolting it, you could take jumper cables, and hook one side from the right batt supply point of the solenoid and connect momentarily the other side of the jumper cable to the left starter side of the solenoid. If the starter spins freely then the starter may still be good.
