I am trying to find the timing mark on pulley on a 352 engine in 1966 F-100.I see XX but nothing else !Is this it?I lined rotary button up with #1 cylinder and still can't tell????Any help?
Sometimes the marks are very faint, almost impossible to read. Once the damper is cleaned off you can try lightly sanding the paint, hopefully revealing the marks, then filling in the marks with a china marker or chalk. For all that, Summit and others sell fluorescent timing tape stickers, these are easy to read and go out to 50 deg, just find 0 deg mark and install and that's the end of that.
Another issue though is that many dampers are two piece with a rubber elastomer. After many years the rubber degrades and the whole assembly slips. This type of damper should be rebuilt or replaced.
I finally found the markings.Had to get the steal brush out and clean.I marked the 0 degrees and the 6 degrees. The owners manual calls for 6 degree setting.I guess I will set and just see how she runs and cranks? Thanks
If the damper hasn't slipped, then 6 deg. will be close to spec. If it has though, the indicated timing will be way off and often cause for much confusion. If you have a vacuum gauge, try using that instead of a light. Setting initial timing this way corrects for a number of potential problems.
Not sure about FE, but Y Blocks like a lot of initial advance and run much better than at the stock 4 or 6 deg. setting.
6-8 degrees is in the ballpark for stock points. If you have electronic ignition, 12 deg initial works well. X2 on the vacuum gauge. Old dizzys can have erratic readings. A reman dizzy is fairly cheap at around $50.
