I found TDC of the compression stroke of cylinder #1.
The timing mark wasn't anywhere near the pointer. (2 O'Clock position)
I finally found another pointer in the 10 O'Clock position.
The mark is in this area.
The timing pointer in the 10 O'clock area has a peep-sight,
and a saw-tooth. How do you use this thing? I need to adjust
my timing to 10 DBTDC, but I'm not sure where this is.
It's the 10:00 one, and if you steel-wool the sawtooth, you'll see that one tooth is slightly larger than the others and there are hash marks & numbers stamped into it. Assuming your harmonic balancer hasn't slipped on the rubber isolator, the center of the timing notch should be on 0deg for TDC.
The peep sight is for an electronic crank position sensor not used on your engine.
Also each valley or ridge in the saw tooth is 2 degrees. When you do find zero if you look counter clockwise 2 teeth that should put you at 8 degrees BTDC, then go to the next valley to get the 10 degrees you should need. (Disclaimer: I'm doing this from memory since my inline is about 70 miles away.) Also mark the damper with white paint pen or similar marking device and the timing mark once you find it. It makes it easier to see incase you didn't know.
I went out and double checked.
I couldn't take a picture because it was dark,
and I couldn't hold the flashlight and snap a digital
image because it was too cold.
Gloves got in the way and all.
Anyway, by just looking, I don't see any sign of
numbers stamped in the saw teeth at all.
Yes, they are a little rusty, so if there are numbers,
they must be just slightly stamped.
And I couldn't see any difference between any of them.
I already have the Haynes manual, so I went out and
found a Chilton's manual that covers this vehicle.
I found a diagram that was kind of similar, which
showed the number of degrees between teeth being two.
(as stated by kspilkinton)
But it doesn't show one tooth larger than any other.
It shows them labled with numbers.
SO, I'll try to clean them up with a scotch bright pad,
but if that doesn't bring out any numbers, which tooth
is number one?
It should be the third "valley" from the top as you head counterclockwise. The peaks read 6 ATDC, 2ATDC, 2BTDC and so on.
How's that for using my memory?
What year did Ford change the timing pointer location? I have a '68 and it uses the numbers imprinted on the timing cover. Boy if you get the wrong year damper you could be in big trouble.
