So back to the OP's question, since you have a reputable shop willing to do it for next to nothing I would have them do the patches for the lower input costs

Here is an oem one. Is this what your looking for? Pricey I know, but they are hard to come by. I have both oem bedsides and it took along time to find. http://www.ebay.com/itm/NOS-1973-1979-Ford-Truck-Driver-Side-Bedside-Panel-74-75-76-77-78-Long-Bed-/321619564951?pt=Vintage_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item4ae2051997&vxp=mtr

Box sides

Below is the culprit of wheel arch rust. A crappily designed wheel well liner. See the dark area? That's where mud, pebbles, and dirt gets trapped because the fricken drain holes are too few and too small. It never dries out. The solution is to section out large areas so it drains better and weld it back in because it braces the bed side.

When I do box sides I take out the inner wheel welł. Like HIO Silver said its the culprit for rust in the first place. Use a pair of front liners an fit them to the rear. With some trimming they fit good. Screw the inner part of the liner to the pinch weld of the box floor. I've done this to every truck I've owned no more rust issues. And I live in Canada hey. Yes it is solid.
