On another front, I'm thinking I might be developing a starter problem. Went to start the pickup this morning and it didn't seem like the batteries had the power to do it. Had them checked when I was in town and they tested just fine. The fellow that tested them agreed that the starter didn't sound like it was turning the motor over the way it should.
The Mistubishi (should be a #M8T50071) planetary-gear reduction starter you have in there is a very stout unit, and the common wisdom is to have YOURS re-built by a competent local rebuilder, NOT some "lifetime guaranteed" unit exchanged from the parts-house chimps.
The usual thing that goes wrong with them is the on-motor solenoid. They're reasonably-cheap, easy, and available if you want to give that a shot yourself.
Well here in old Eugene I ended up going to the ER at 4 am after a very bad coughing fit and yup, it's bronchitis. Oh yay! Got meds and a work release note, just going to pass out for a few days. On the bright side, maybe this will help me get better so I can get the 78 fixed over spring break. Looks so sad sitting there not being driven.

Had to run back out to the farm. Home now.
Will most likely pull the starter, take it in and get it tested. If it is just the solenoid then that is a $50 fix.
The starter motor seems to strain, turns slowly and sounds like it is winding up, but never gets much beyond the sluggish phase. Just as if the batteries didn't have enough juice to spin it up.
I noticed this morning that it went to nothing, including wiping the presets out on the stereo and yet when I let off the key, I had juice for lights, radio and horn. When I put the battery charger on it, it was only like 15 to 20 minutes at 15 amps before it was showing fully charged. So anyway, I'm theorizing that the starter is trying to draw way more juice than it should and is exceeding the 1000 CCA of the batteries.
Good evening Oregon and everyone everywhere else. Clouds burned off and we had a nice sunny day from around 1000 this morning.
Got father in to get his car. They did replace the solenoid and the engine ECL is extinguished. What they were talking about was that they can not get the codes to clear from the PCM. Light is out, but the codes that turned the light on are still there????? Thinking I should put my scanner on it, confirm that codes are in fact present and try clearing them with mine. They cleared just fine the other day, but then came back a few seconds after the car was started.

That is looking very nice Allen. Wow, those are spendy doors! Dream Line, Allen + Roth or just gold plated?
I've been putting the Warden off for some time and it won't be long before I have to sell the boat and half my fishing poles to get her the "garden jet tub" and shower she has been wanting. Problem is, I think we'll have to add on to the house to have enough bathroom to fit it into.
Put the Tub outside........aka: Hot Tub.......Tell her that is the offer.....take it or do without......

If the contacts in the solenoid are f ud........Could be drawing a bunch of current across the high resistance contacts .......which is also dropping the voltage that the starter motor sees..........

You are way behind the curve here Roy. She has had one of those on order complete with a Gazebo equipped with sliding windows for years....I get reminded of that several times each year and I've been shown and have model numbers of every spa at the State Fair memorized!
She didn't think it was too funny when I bought her the ski tube for behind the boat. I thought she could get plenty of relaxing "jet" action on that thing at 30 MPH!
My first guess, under those circumstances, dirty cable connections, or like Roy said, solenoid.
Could be the ground connections, as well.
When you put the starter back in the truck, use LocTite on the bolts, and torque to spec. I can look that up if you need it.

Being the cheap skate that I am, I thought I would start on connections first. I'll clean each one up and reconnect. I was just out looking at it and it looks like there is a lot of dirt and FOD there so definitely needs cleaned. Then if I get the same result I'll go ahead and pull the starter. It's going to have to hold up for another day or two as I have to have it to haul a tiller and some tractor parts. If it goes completely out on me, well...I have my cell phone, towing insurance and blood pressure pills!
I've got a Haynes Manual here that has the torque specs. Thanks.

Torque specs is easy........1/2" Breaker Bar + Pull real hard = Done...........
