Need to tap into the wealth of knowledge that is this forum! I never normally use the key to lock or unlock the doors as the fob does a good job, however the lock button is getting a bit temperamental so a couple of times I've had to lock the doors with the key, I've ordered a couple of transmitters & key blanks as I don't have a spare, anyway tonight the key blanks have arrived so just thought I'd check them before I pay to get them cut & while I was at it I tried to unlock the door with the original key, it turns both ways but with a fair bit of resistance toward unlock, the lock button inside moves up a little but not fully, I don't know if there is a contact that operates the lock motors or if it is a purely mechanical thing. The passenger side is the same, any advice appreciated, I'll tear it apart at the weekend if it's an easy fix.
Truck is late '99 F350 Lariat
Thanks Rob
It's a mechanical thing. Pull the interior door panel and take a look to see what's going on. Could be the rod that is snapped into place with the plastic "grabber" connector has slipped.
If so, a small screwdriver will pry the mouth of the little grabber open and let you re-position the rod and then snap the grabber door back in place.
I have the same problem with my '97 Thunderbird. Same deal as you....very seldom use the key to unlock.....
Try spraying some lube spray (may be even WD-40 into the key hole first.....it helped my car......otherwise you might need to remove the door panels and lube from inside.
Do your power locks work freely? if so its certainly related to the key lock itself.....
Thanks guys, I'll have a look at the weekend, truck has ultra low miles so I don't think the key is worn, it is my truck (there aren't too many F350 duallys in the UK!), the power locks work fine, the truck was dry stored for 5 years before I bought it so I'm hoping its just a little seized.
It's a little square chip inside the actuator motor. Really easy to fix with a penny over here in the U.S. I'm sure you can find something comparable over there.
