New Symptoms

Taking my truck for its first trip since I got the injector problems fixed. Pulling a gooseneck with a very light load, total weight about 8,500.

It seems low on power. I'd think it should handle that weight easily, even up some of the small hills around. It does this thing where it sounds like it's in neutral when I give it pedal - high rpm sound, but the tach doesn't move and no change in speed or power. I think it's either the turbo or the fan.

The Ford tech had warned me that my fan clutch (IIRC) was going out. Would it make a lot of noise and go real fast? Would it drastically affect engine performance? I expect not, and that it's my turbo. I still get boost, usually between 0-20.

Not much boost over 20 psi?

When giving it a lot of pedal and the boost is under 20 are you seeing black smoke?

My first instinct would be a cracked hot side CAC hose or a blown y-pipe flex joint.

I'll second the cracked CAC tube or hose. Assuming he's still got the OEM plastic one, the bellows have been a problem area for many. I'd look for oil in that area...below the driver's side battery toward the radiator is where I'd start my search. Seeing up to 20 pounds of boost makes it sound like it's a small leak.

Most folks that have experienced a cracked/blown y-pipe either see allot of soot on the firewall or describe a tea kettle under the hood when the truck is trying to pull. But that's just what I've read from others, I'm still on the original with my truck. It'll fail tomorrow now that I've bragged, no doubt.

I just replaced the upper hot side CAC boot before the trip. Noticed that the new one from Ford was shorter than the old one - is that normal? It still seemed to fit, and I was hearing some whistling before I replaced it - it had two two-inch cracks on the outside and at least one of them had penetrated through the inside.

Anyway, replaced it and most of that whistle went away, but I may still have a little.

I do know the turbo intake plastic has a crack in it.

Where is the "y pipe"?

I do have the plastic one. Is there a metal replacement? Is it like the hot side tube - with boots at each end?

So, could y'all describe what is happening when a leaky CAC tube causes that loud whining? Is that the turbo racing?

No smoke, that I've noticed. Aside - when it's running right, the truck never smokes. However, the other morning, I turned the key on, forgot about it and came back a few minutes later to start it for the first time that day. It didn't fire right up as usual, so I thought it might be that I waited too long after the fuel pump did it's thing. I started over and the second time it started fairly quickly, but it blew out a small smoke cloud real fast and then ran just fine. I think it was just a one-off occurrence having something to do with leaving the key one.

There are 2 different sizes. My brother has an 05 and has the short CAC tube, my truck is an 06 and it has a longer one. Not sure why it's different.

Hmm. That's odd. Well, it seemed to work. I'll check it again it the morning for leaks.

Rats.
Had hoped to see you staying on the road.

When looking for air leaks in the exhaust a stick
with a short string is you best tool. Not as likely
to get burned by hot pipes.

Here is a test setup for the CAC system
I guess you could also do this on the exhaust side also.

Well, made it home late last night with plans to do this test today, and darn if my truck didn't die on me this morning before I could work on it. I started a new thread about it because the symptoms are nothing like anything I've dealt with yet.

BTW, after driving longer on my trip this week, I'm now not sure that the symptoms I described here are real. I think the trans may have just been acting confused because I was pulling so much weight but didn't have it in Tow/Haul mode. Once I clicked that button, I didn't see those symptoms again.
