"most 2005 Excursions got the 2004 6L (up to build dates in the May/June 2005+ time frame) since Ford wanted to use up all their older engines.. (I have an '04 6L in my '05 Ex as well).
Thus, the internals: standpipes and dummy plugs are different than an '05 SD/6L. Just keep that in mind."
Is this also true for the F250's and is there an easy way to tell which motor is installed.
What other differences should I be aware of. Trying to help a buddy with his 6.0
His is an early 05 truck. That's why I'm wondering if there is an easy way to tell if he got an 04 motor. (serial numbers, etc.) Seems like a lot of changes 03/04/05. just have to figure them out as we go.

Thanks,
NO
The 05+ Super Duty has the "Message Center" dash, which requires the new version of PCM and/or Programming and wiring harness..
The 05 Excursion got the left over 04 Engines, and even when the 04 engines ran out in May/June 05, the Excursion got 05 Engines but with a special "Excursion-ONLY" PCM and/or flash - since NO Excursion got the updated Dash in 05+ (or 4x4 suspension, or upgraded brakes either).
An 05 6L Excursion owner has a very rare version of an already rare model.
Yes, but when buying many suspension springs it's an '04 SD/Excursion you want parts for.
'04 brakes/wheels (16" wheels won't fit on the '05+ SD brakes)
But an '05 SD Front Grill/bumper
It's a lot of ... fun.
I had an early 99 (Feb 1998 build date I believe) F350 Super Duty 7.3... talk about fun buying parts, that was a unique lesson in patience getting anything brake or suspension related.
