What year is this thing?

How do I tell what the build date of the engine was? The truck was sold to me as a 05 but the door sticker show 08/04. Does this mean that the engine is an 04? I'm trying to find out if there are any recalls but it looks like I need to know when the engine was built.

Your truck was built in 04 as an 05 model. So yes it is technically an 04. You should be able to find a label on the valve cover (passenger side) with the motor build date.

No, technically it is an '05. 2005 production started in July, 2004. All trucks built after that are 2005.
There were no 2004 engines in 2005 trucks. Because of the front suspension change a 2004 engine will not fit in a 2005 truck.

Mine has the same build date and there are no recalls on it - ran the VIN yesterday. As a matter of curiosity, what had to change from the 04 on the 05 (on the motor itself) to make it fit in regard to the new suspension? I had an 04 and the engine looks the same on the exterior. Casey, help me on this one - I learn something every time I have time to read FTE.

I have looked on the sticker on the pasenger side valve cover. It has a big 2005 printed at the top but I don't see a build date. Did I just over look it or is it somewhere else?

I think it was the front cover is a little different shape to clear the crossmember.

Casey - stick with me, I don't get it yet. What is the "front cover"?
