Just joined the club and have a few questions. My heads on my 390 in my high-boy are casting number C8AE-H. What the flip are they? I have heard so many conflicting answers my head is swimming. Could someone please give me an answer? Also what else can I do on a budget to help this thing make power. I use it on the mud drag circut so I need all the help I can get. Thanks!!!!!
First of all, most 360's magically turn into 390's on sale day. Since they never put a 390 in a 4x4, make sure it's a 390. Only way I know of is to check the stroke. A 360 will have a stroke of slightly less than 3.5" (3.48") The 390 will have a stroke of 3.74".
The most important thing you can do to make power, is make sure you're working with what you think you are.

To answer your original question about the heads. Here is a post from an FTE moderator Krewat back in 2006 in answer to basically the same question:
C8AE-H heads were used from 68 up until '72. At that time, the D2TE heads (yes, D2TE) were used. Basically, I guess, there were no more passenger cars with FE's by the time these heads were made. The ONLY diff between a D2TE and a C8AE are the induction-hardened exhaust valve seats.
The C8AE-H head came in 8, 12 or 16 bolt exhaust manifold patterns. An 8 bolt head can be made into a 12 or 16 bolt, but I believe the upper hole needs to be filled and re-drilled slightly offset. Not sure on that one.

D2TE-AA heads have extra "cooling fins" on the backside of the exhaust seats within the coolant passage.

They were actualy only in 8 and 14 bolt. Only heads with 16 bolt are 6090-N which are 428 CJ heads.
