Hello all! I have got my 77 almost ready for the road. Problem is when i replaced the 1977 3speed column shifter, I replace the signal light switch with one from an earlier model...1971ish. All the wire matched in color except one, so I figured that it must go with the other wire. I guess I was wrong. Signal lights work fine in the front and sort of fine in the rear, just when I turn the signal light lever to nuetral the signal light comes on solid. Does anyone have the color codes for the a 1977 switch and a 1971ish switch. I can than compare and see what needs to switched. Thanks. I will put some picks up in my gallery of my backyard Summit SS paint job. Came out good,I think.
I only have access to '72 and '79 diagrams, so I can't guarantee we're looking at the same thing, but they should be close enough.
On both trucks, GREEN is the right-hand tail light (stop/turn); YELLOW with BLACK stripe is for the left-hand tail light (stop/turn). On both trucks, WHITE with BLUE stripe is the right front turn signal and dash indicator. GREEN with WHITE stripe is the left front turn signal and dash indicator. These should match between the two generations.
Also on both trucks, BLUE is power coming from the turn signal flasher, and BLACK with RED stripe is power coming from the brake switch.
It gets a little tricky after that because the diagram I'm looking at makes the hazard and horn switches appear as if they're separate units on the early model truck, which does not sound right. My advice to you is to purchase the correct switch. There's also nothing to say that your '71 switch is not bad in the first place. Also, if you're saying the dash indicators come on solid, very often that's not even an issue with the switch itself, but a ground problem at the front sockets.

On the 67-72 trucks, the hazard switch was a push-pull switch mounted of all places, inside the glove box. But it seems I remember the '72 I used to have had a push pull switch on the dash, but that was a loooong time ago .

1970/72 has a push pull switch on the dash.

Thanks, I have the original switch but I had to piece two column together to get shifter working again. The dash lighys are working OK, the problem seams to be on the drivers side rear. It wants to stay on all the time. If I switch it on it will blink, but switch off and it stays on. I know I just have a wire crossed somewhere and hate to pull in all apart and resolder a switch. I will check those colors and get back.
Problem Solved!!! I changed the switch back to the original and it still did not work. In the process I had to take apart all my splices and after some trial and error I found if the red wire was disconnected the signals worked fine. Then it dawned on me... the red wire is the brake light running through the turn signal switch to cancel it out. So the problem was not the turn signal at all, it was the brake switch staying on. Thanks all!!
I don't quite follow what you're saying. BLACK with RED stripe is brake light power, as per my original post. I don't know what you mean by "cancel it out." Brake light power goes through the turn signal switch so that the turn signals can interrupt either brake light so that it continues to blink. But if it's working now, then good deal, whatever it was that fixed it.
