-Senior Communications Technician. I build and maintain public safety communications infrastructure and 911 phone systems. This is why you see my truck at remote locations with a communications tower nearby. I keep our first responders in contact. 32 years.
I've been a physicist, a mechanical engineer and had a few management jobs. Right now I manage a large experimental facility that literally makes the earth shake about once a day.
starting classes in the fall for I&C; they require a fluke87 and HP33s to the tune of $600.... for a damn multimeter and calculator.
I would advise you to get a TI-89 along with the HP33, the HP33 is pretty basic (probably required just for exams). The ti-89 will come in real handy when you get to your calc heavy classes.
I'm suprised your labs at school don't have a meter at each bench, when I was in school (only 2 years ago) we had a DMM at pretty much every lab bench.
It seems like a Fluke would be overkill for what you'll likely be doing your first few years in labs. I would go get a harbor freight DMM and paint it yellow, like 4x4slik was getting at. But serioulsy I used my HF meters throughout college, they have some pretty nice features like the transistor tester sockets (for DC gain) and a thermocouple all for $20. Like this guy:
I'm a IT/Security Engineer. I work on IPS/IDS systems, firewalls (the computer kind ) and administer/harden our systems for our company (servers, etc). I also build and tinker with computers on the side.
OK this is off topic (Just a bit) since you guys have been chatting about DMM's I have 2 Fluke DMM's and an old school Simpson analog meter. Gotta love the old Simpson's.
Man you guys have some cool jobs. I'm a grunt in a warehouse for a large retailer for the last 20 years. Also did air, hydraulic, and electric tool repair for a few years up until a few months ago.
I am a HVAC Controls technician. Was a hvac mechanic for 12 years prior to getting into controls. Man am i glad i made the move. Love that simpson analog meter NBC steve. I am a fluke guy too.
