93 F-350 CC 7.3 IDI Factory Turbo
4x2 Dually
Problem: I think my turbo may be going down not sure. Thursday I took air filter housing off to change glow plugs and noticed there were significant amount of oil inlet side of the turbo. I've also got a huge oil consumption as well? What does all this mean besides $$ for me? What exactly is wrong? I don't want to purchase a turbo and it be the engine.
Also if it is the turbo.. how exactly do I remove it? I notice its very close to firewall just needing some info or guide on how to remove I can do most of the mechanic work myself.
I would start by cleaning or replacing the cdr. It's the can looking thing that should be on the drivers side valve cover. If you take it off and let it soak in gas for an hour or two and shake
it around a few times, it should clean up. You might have to replace it though. There's some good right- ups on the forum here. I would try to link them but I'm camping and all I have is my phone. Haven't figured the thing out yet! My turbo inlet stays wet with oil. I can clean it all up and the next day after I drive it, it's wet again. But I only have to put about a quart of oil in it between oil changes. Good luck.
Oil is normal in there... maybe not good, but normal. Crank case gases are sucked into the intake. Oil condenses in the turbo / intake. Lots of oil and oil consumtion mean lots of blowby.
Also, when you have lots of blowby, one option is to build yourself a catch-can; put it between your blow-by gas source and your CDR.
I built one from $20 in components(6" of 4"-dia PVC pipe, caps, a divider and some of that loose fiber air filter media), and it pulled several ounces of oil out of the air stream in 100 miles.
Really dried out the turbo and everywhere that oil had ended up leaking, too.
