Looks like I'm going to be building the website for the Lynchburg 9/11 Memorial Stairclimb (I have a way of inserting myself into the middle of these types of things). This should be interesting!
Absolutely. It will also look excellent on a resume if I were to decide to apply to the city department...plus most of the members of the planning committee are city firefighters, so it's a really good networking opportunity. It's an all around win-win.
I've been considering it. I'm never going to make enough money working on cars to live the way I want (modestly) while saving the way I am now so that I can comfortably retire at a decent age.
Of course the money factor is just icing on the proverbial cake. I can't think of anything I'd rather do for the next 30 years than spending every day helping people. Plus of all the professional firefighters I've known, there wasn't one I didn't absolutely enjoy being around. Wrenching on cars 40 hours a week is just way too frustrating.
But I'm going to see how volunteering goes first. If I make it through Firefighter I, run a call or two with casualty, continue busting my ***, and still want to do it, then I'll apply for the city department. Of course the city department isn't the easiest to get on to. Recruit school isn't entirely unlike military boot camp.
