Speedometer acting up

I have a 79 f150 with a C-6. The past few times that I have had it out the speedometer won't register from a stop until about 30 mph. When it finally decides to work it kind of jumps it's way up to the speed I am traveling and then works fine until i stop again. Any suggestions on what the problem may be?

The inner cable might just be dry and needs to be lubricated. I would try that route first so see if it helps.
