lug nuts and studs

Any idea why my rear axle would have 9/16" studs and the front has 1/2"? both are D60's, both off of my 79 F350.

I'm pretty sure it's a 60. I'll check again when I get home.

Are they left hand thread? depending on GVWR some F350's were 9/16 LH thread.....if not, someone most likely swapped them in.

I'm even more confused now. It looks like BOM is 6039013 which shows here http://www2.dana.com/pdf/X510-9.pdf as a 1979 F-250 4X4 - Full Float (no listing for 79 f350). It def has the correct thread, but 9/16th studs. Date on the cover is 86 so I guess it's not original. So do I assume PO swapped studs?

Any other input on this?

Also, any input on what I need to do to make the front axle match now? I've got the front completely tore down for a rebuild and would like to add the bigger studs now but have no clue what studs I need.

The PO might have swapped the rear axle shafts and they had different size studs? Or the front rotor/hubs might have been swapped? You do know the front ones come apart right?

The hub and the rotor will come apart into to separate pieces when you drive out the studs, great time to replace the rotor or get turned if needed.

As far as to get them to match, you just get some new 9/16 studs, tap out the old 1/2 inch studs (put/stack threaded on 2 old lug nuts on the stud to save the threads) and then tap in the new ones.

When tapping in the new ones make sure they start straight and once started use a open lug nut and some big washers and a 4 way to pull it in AND tap the back side to make sure it draws in straight and tight.

Tell the parts counter guy you need 16 ea 9/16 wheel studs for a 79 D60 front axle.

cool. will do. I hate having two sizes of lug nuts. rotors are in great shape, just rusty so I'm going to clean them up and paint them as well as everything else. Gonna replace the seals and that's about all she needs. Ujoints are solid.
