Speedometer went crazy

So I'm driving my '66 custom cab today and the speedometer went crazy. It has been acting erratic lately in that it will jump around from say 45 mph to 70 mph and then right back down. Today I was driving at a constant speed and when I looked at the speedo, it kept increasing in speed. I was maintaining about 55 mph and the speedo kept going and going. It hovered at about 95 for a minute and then on to 100 and it eventually buried the needle. Haven't seen the needle since. I am sure it is a problem with the speedometer. I have a rebuilt C6, new speedo cable and gear. Anyone had a problem like this before? Or can anyone recommend someone to repair it?

Mark, I have an idea that there is an issue with the cable at the head since you have replaced things at the tranny. Hard to guess if it is broken, just needs lubing, or what. Since you can see both ends try removing it from the tranny and spin it with your fingers while someone watches the dash to see if it moves any at all.

Probably gonna be a trial and error thing, til you get it figured out.

I have this phenom occur periodically with my '65. It seems to happen when the weather is warm to hot. I never have it happen in the winter time. I have checked the cable and the nylon gears and they are in fine shape. I read a blog about this problem a while ago but they were not really clear about the cause. it seems that the needle moves through some kind of a magnetic reaction in relation to the speed of the rotating cable. The needle is not directly attached to the cable at all - so it would seem. Maybe someone with more knowledge will chime in here with the fix. Steve

The head needs to be rebuilt! The bearing went bad allowing the two parts of the magnetic drive to make physical contact.
