I have have an 79 F250. My speedometer froze up and it decided to break the cable also. I replaced the cable, with a new one from LMC. I found a used speedometer locally. The speedometer that was in the truck and froze was an 80mph and the new to me one is a 100mph. I put the new new one in and it worked for about 2 miles down the road and then stopped. Pulled the dash back apart. I can watch the end of the speedometer cable turn when i roll the truck and I can turn the back of the speedometer itself with my fingers and make the gauge move. However when I put the two together the guage doesnt work. I have pulled it apart and put it back together a few times and have not had any more luck. Will a 100mph gauge not work in the place of an 80? Not sure what I am missing and suggestions would be great. Thanks.
I had a similar problem on mine (speedometer needle either had the shakes, froze at a certain speed or didn't work) - I found that I had to back it out of the speedometer just a little to get it to turn normally. If I pushed it all the way into the speedometer I'd get one or more of the symptoms above.
I just drove around and would reach under and adjust the cable a little until it was working good. Been 6 months and it's been working fine for me.
Exactly, until it clips - then backed off a little (I don't think more than 1/4-3/8". (I drove around the neighborhood and just stopped, reached under the dash and moved it a little either way until it seemed to behave). I think if the cable pushes too much into the back of the speedometer it gets jammed up.
(before all of this I had replaced the speedometer cable, checked the ends just like you did). Ended up trying this out before I was going to go buy a "new" speedometer. So far so good. Hope it works for you.
Kegger66, thanks. Pushed the cable on till it clipped and then gave it a tug back. Speedo seemed to work rolling the truck in the driveway. Won't be till this weekend to road test it, but right now she works
