Block and Crankshaft

Hello All,

Just bought a what I was told was a rebuilt 390 shortblock. When I started checking casting numbers I was surprised at what the numbers showed. The block is stamped: "C4AE 6015-A" and the crank is stamped "C4AE-B". The numbers show that this could be a 427 yet it does not have crossbolt mains. Is this a 390 then? i have posted pics. Thanks!

A 427FE need not have cross-bolted mains because there were side-oiler and center oiler 427s.

Can't see yer pics and ya can't go by casting (engineering) numbers. Instead, measure the stroke difference btwn cylinders 1 and 7 at TDC. Post your results.

Those are 1964 427 numbers.
The block could be a truck block.
Do you know if they were originally together or mixed later?
If they were originally together then you may have a 427.
Notice I'm being vague.
I can't see your pics.

Here are the OP's pictures.
Also, you'll need to measure the bore to identify the engine. Both 390 and 427 have the 3.78" stroke. 390 bore is 4.05", 427 is 4.23"

From the picture it looks like the block has the bosses cast into it for the cross bolts but they aren't machined.
Here's a late model 390 tuck block bottom end.

Thanks Mike
I think I see the extra webbing in the block and it has castings for cross bolt mains.
I'm going to guess and say that crank was mixed with this block.
The big clue is the undrilled cross bolt bosses.
These were used for trucks a bit.

BTW
No matter what.
I would love to own that block.
Check the bores and let us know what you find.

Well...the not so good thing is that the block has been bored 60+ because at 40+ the cylinders were not symmetrical..... I will not be racing this engine but i would like to make it have some kick for a daily driver.

The good thing is that is was prolly a truck block and it may have some meat there. These blocks I believe we're cast with extra material in a cloverleaf pattern around the bores.
If it were me I would take it apart and get it sonic checked for piece of mind.
Use your cool crank, clean up the bores only and make a street machine out of it.
Also if it were mine, if all checked out I would make those cool cross bolt bosses real.
