Hey, My FE block in my 60 F100 has a D4TE casting number, And information on the web as to engine size via casting number is confusing. Some sources say 360, some say 390. What do I have ? any help appreciated.
It could be a 360 or 390. Can't tell with the numbers you gave. Easiest way to find out would be to check stroke. If heads are still bolted up, pull a plug and drop a long skinny rod(wooden dowel?) thru the plugs hole. Rotate crank until the dowel is at it's furthest depth in the hole.(Piston being all the way down) Mark the dowel with a pen, then rotate crank to TDC (Top Dead Center) then again mark your dowel. Measure the distance between marks.
are there other casting numbers that would conclusively i.d. ? where would they be located ?
Not on the block. Fords later casting numbers are PMU for the most part. FWIW the 360 and 390 D4 block castings are the same with a 4.05 std bore.... just a different stroke crank as mentioned. There might be a tag on the engine telling displacement but other than that no precise way to tell. You can also put cyl on #1 and remove the #1 and 4 plugs for the dowel trick. with #1 at TDC cyl #4 will be at BDC.
