How much water do you need in the jar before you start to panic? Obviously if there is a sufficient amount you should stop everything and get the truck towed but if there are only a few drops is there a reason for panic or do you just keep a close eye on it?
In my opinion, the separator is designed to eliminate "drops" of water and if you get some drops of water that you drain out, but the WIF light doesn't come on (or any amount that doesn't exceed the ability of separator which isn't much, but I don't know the exact amount) no big deal. Don't go back to that fuel station again and let them know why you aren't coming back.
If you more water than the separator can handle or don't drain it often enough so it builds up and you get a WIF light, you have a problem. I'd have it towed to a dealer or a competent diesel mechanic.
If you see some drops. Empty sample container. And drive it maybe a day and then take another sample. If you have more in it then. I would recommend draining fuel tank.. if not keep a eye on it for awhile.

I've had the dreaded WIF light. I also felt panic when I saw that light! I was about 5 miles from home. I was in a remote parking lot so I was going to do the wrong thing and just drain it on the parking lot. I couldn't turn the dam ****. I went home and got pliers and turned it. I probably got about 5 or 6 oz. out of it. If you look at the filter body, it is designed to hold about that much before the water contacts the detection probes. I wouldn't think that just because you had that much water, that it would get into the fuel system. If that was the case, you would think the system would shut down the engine rather than tell you to drain the water out of it. I naturally checked it again and got no water out of it. Now, I had gone about 2 months without checking and I had gotten fuel at a place I was not familiar with, so shame on me. That incident happened well over a year ago and I have had no related fuel symptoms and I would hope that one warning would not sit in the PCM forever and be used against me in some future fuel issue. Does the code contain a date?
I heard multiple time from different sources that the info (in this case the WIF related codes) is there if you go looking for it forever. I don't present this as fact, just what my tech has told me and what I've read here. So wait for one of the guys that "knows" for sure.
Being new to diesel engines, all I know is what I have read on here and in the Ford Diesel Manual that comes with the truck. And I remember reading to drain the DFCM when the light come on.
Should I get into a routine to drain it monthly or even less an interval?
I have probably filled up 5 or 6 times since owning the truck. Thank you.
I would do it monthly. If wif light comes on you may have a significant amount of water in fuel.( from all ive read) Most will do it once a month.More if fuel from sketchy place in the middle of no where.
I always fuel up my tidy tank... It has 2 filters on that tank.. A water separator and a regular one.. Then it goes through both the filters on the truck as well... Only had the truck since xmas but haven't found a drop off water in it.
